Supporting Families with Special Needs
Families who have children with special needs need a lot of support. Please post an idea of how a teacher can support these families by providing information, resources and support groups. Include a website or article in your post.
As a social service technician I have learned about many resources out there in the community. It starts with the application process when parents have concerns and I listen to their concerns and I have a little knowledge of where I can direct them. We ask if child has an Ifsp or Iep and sometimes they only come in with information from a Dr. Referring them to a preschool. Its important to provide the referrals and information so they can follow through with making the first contact for early intervention. Below are some resources I utilize to provide more information to parents in need of support services with special needs.

Teachers can help and support families with special needs by providing a lot of resources and organization that can help them. Also, sharing observations and identifying and discussing the child's strengths and interest are great ways to help the child improve and succeed.

Families who have children with special needs need a lot of support. Teachers can support families by providing information , resources, and support groups. One idea to support families is to hold a parent training and have an information center available at the site. Inviting guest speakers in to parent meetings and conducting trainings allows parents to connect and exchange information with one another. Allowing time for parents to network with one another is also beneficial. A community resources library also helps families with information at their disposal.

The teachers can provide the families with support and information, also if there is a specialist avialble at the school the tecaher could encourage the parents to meet with him/her too. On our community there are a lot of different agencies that support families with children with special needs a lot of these agencies offer free services. The Expecional Family Resource Center is a great community resource to share with the parents, and they serve the South Bay and Imperial County. This is their website

As a teacher you need to support the families in every way you can. Helping parents dealing with their new challenge in life is very important. It is always important to have open communication with the families. Give positive feed back to the families about their child. You can give parents resources on the topic of their childs disability.
